Children’s Author, Elizabeth Ferris: How a story about an adorable Airedale is helping steer children away from mindless entertainment.

Author Elizabeth Ferris is on a mission, she aims to help people of all ages to spend quality time together with her Positively Georgia book series.

For Ferris, the inspiration for Georgia and her adventures was found in her own history. Ferris is a first-generation Canadian, having parents who immigrated to Canada from Hungary to escape communism. Although they arrived in an unfamiliar country unable to speak English, Ferris’ parents built a life, grew a family, and have enjoyed 60 love-filled years together. Growing up, she witnessed firsthand how their belief in their own abilities and in accomplishing their goals made the impossible possible. “The bravery they showed as they pursued and achieved their dreams is the foundation for Georgia’s wisdom,” says Ferris.

Ferris’ books seem to be about Georgia, an Airedale Terrier. The family pet was the inspiration for the character. Georgia is more than just a “good girl” who loves making new friends. This dog sees our world for what it can be: wonderful and with infinite possibilities, each second being another one of those opportunities.

Elisabeth helps grownups talk about difficult subjects to children. Many of which are discussed only when there is no other option.

Positively Georgia: The Motivational Tale of a Unique Airedale, Georgia – the first book of the series is all about the impact of positive energy and how the channeling of that energy can make the world a better place.

Positively Georgia’s Guide to Surviving Grief, Ferris – how does one even begin to explain the concept of loss or death to a child? Children must be protected, yet not lied to. For Ferris, addressing the topic was important, and to do it tactfully, essential. “The loss of a loved one is a gut-wrenching experience,” she says. “This book helps children and adults learn how to process loss and still enjoy a happy and rewarding life.”

Younger and older readers can improve their self-confidence and realize their potential as they join Georgia on her own journey of self-discovery and acceptance with the latest release of the series, Positively Georgia: Chin Up, Pup.

Georgia’s perfectly positive attitude and the wonder she finds in everyday situations, can sometimes be naïve, yet it’s better to be naïve rather than to suffer for no reason.

While the Positively Georgia series is intended for children 8 years and up, younger children love hearing Georgia’s adventures read aloud, and adults are often surprised how much they glean from the escapades of this positive dog. This may be due, in part, to the fact that Georgia’s stories are rife with jokes and humor that may be missed by younger readers but delight older audiences.

Ferris plans to continue the Positively Georgia series with new releases in 2021. For her, Georgia’s message is too important to let momentum slow down. “Georgia will continue to encourage readers to envision their dreams, set goals, and then go full force and make them come true,” she says.

Mindless entertainment can while the time away but doesn’t teach much. Every moment spent reading a good book is a golden moment. Let’s cherish and enjoy them.
