Dog Parents Consider the Effects of CBD for Their Pet

CBD products are all the rage. There are many companies that are selling different forms of CBD including tinctures, pain patches, and gummies, and CBD products can be found in many local markets and pharmacies. While scientific testing hasn’t caught up to the surge in use, many people claim that CBD helps them with issues like pain, anxiety, stress, and sleeping problems.

If CBD products are so beneficial for humans, does it follow that CBD can also help pets? Let’s look at what we know about CBD.

What is CBD?

All CBD products are derived from the hemp plant.  CBD stands for cannabidiol, a cannabinoid which is the main ingredient in CBD products. Hemp plants are also used in clothing, rope, jewelry, and skin care products. Although marijuana and CBD are both derived from the hemp plant, neither only marijuana contains high amounts of THC.

Can CBD Get You or Your Pet High?

No. CBD products do not contain enough THC to produce a hallucinogenic effect. According to law, CBD products cannot contain more than .3 percent of THC. Full spectrum products can contain up to .3 percent while full spectrum products only contain trace amounts, which is legally allowed, but Broad spectrum CBD products contain none.

What is CBD Used to Treat?

Many people have reported relief from issues like anxiety, sleeplessness, restlessness, and pain through the use of CBD products. Much less is known about cbd for pets simply because they cannot communicate with us directly and because of the lack of research, but there are things that pet owners have observed.

CBD Use for Dogs

Since CBD has worked for some people, it may be possible to treat dogs of the following conditions:

  • Physical pain

  • Anxiety and behavioral issues caused by noises and stress

  • Inflammation

  • Epilepsy

  • Nausea

A few research studies have been done. One study showed that CBD helped reduce seizure frequency in dogs with epilepsy. While this is an encouraging outcome, only 26 dogs were tested. Similar results were found in studies conducted with dogs who had arthritis pain, anxiety, and aggressive behavior. While the CBD helped some, no study used more than 24 dogs so the results can’t be proved conclusively.

What is the Correct Dosage Amount?

The best way to be sure that you are giving your dog a safe dose of CBD is to consult a veterinarian. The dosage amount should be based on the severity of the problem, the weight of the animal, and the overall health condition of your pet. Your veterinarian can also provide you with symptoms to watch for that might indicate that your pet has overdosed or is having a bad reaction to the CBD.

CBD products may very well provide relief to your pet’s problem. To ensure the ultimate safety for your pet, be sure to consult a veterinarian and use the CBD under his or her guidance.
