Step aside, Velcro. Weight activated self-lacing shoes hit the market

August 19 01:06 2021
Someone overslept and they’re late. The dog needs to pee. A kid has no time to tie their shoes! People need to move!

Powerlace knows it, and has the perfect solution: the world’s first bodyweight-activated self-lacing shoes.

“It’s an ‘overnight success story’ 10 years in the making,” explains Powerlace Founder Frédérick Labbé. “We recently won a patent for the shoes, but our team has put more than ten years into developing the first bodyweight-activated self-lacing shoe that fits perfectly,” says Powerlace Marketing & Sales Director David Santagata.  “I’m happy to say that those who buy them love them!”

“I wear these all the time,” says one Powerlace customer. “I’ll probably never buy another pair of shoes!”

Not only are Powerlace shoes built with durable materials, but they also rely solely on body weight to self-lace. No batteries or electricity are needed.

Made from high-end durable materials, space-grade reinforcement fibers – including laces that are 15 times stronger than steel – with an automatic lacing system. Featuring advanced rubber soles, cutting-edge technology mesh, or Napa leather, they come with a wide selection of colours and Dyneema laces that never come undone.

“They’re so easy to put on,” says Powerlace Head of Innovation Jonathan Boisvert. “Just slide your foot into the shoe opening and let your body weight activate the automatic lacing system. It’s a custom fit every time.”

For a quick, hands-free removal, Powerlace users simply press the heel release lever with their other foot.

The Powerlace shoe has been tested for walking and running on various terrains, even in extreme conditions; it can withstand more than 10,000 self-lacing cycles.

Powerlace urban leather models are offered in black, blue, and brown, while leisure mesh models come in black and grey. A women’s line of Powerlace shoes is in development.

And it all started with a Kickstarter campaign. The Kickstarter for Powerlace bodyweight-activated self-lacing shoes already raised 10X its initial goal of $12,500, rocketing to over $100,000, after just one week on the marketplace.

“The tremendous response we’ve seen from our Kickstarter backers shows we’re on a firm footing with this launch,” says Powerlace Marketing & Sales Director David Santagata.

Powerlace is also seeing high demand from retailers who want to sell the product in stores. The company is also planning boutique storefronts. Up next could be boots, golf shoes, and safety shoes. The pricing on Kickstarter for Powerlace shoes is $159 for the mesh model and $185 for the urban, leather model.
