SUVtv and HBCU League Pass to Co-Produce Two Milestone Basketball Events This Weekend
Mikey Williams will be a part of both showcases

CHARLOTTE/NASHVILLE – August 25, 2021 – As part of a recently announced partnership between SUVtv and HBCU League Pass, two noteworthy basketball events will be featured on both platforms this weekend. The first will be an August 27 practice session introducing the Charlotte-based Vertical Academy basketball program headlined by 5-star prospect Mikey Williams. Williams will also be a part of The Main Event, an all star game that features some of the best players in the country competing in a showcase hosted by NYBA Basketball on Sunday, August 29 in Nashville, TN.

Mikey Williams bolstered buzz and healthy conversation around HBCU sports when he included five historically black universities in his Top 10 list last year in the weeks following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others. While sports pale in comparison to the importance of social justice for the lives lost and their families – a year later – the HBCU League Pass is an initiative created to make an impact by helping HBCU sports gain traction that benefits the universities and the grassroots groups that feed into them.

Created by Mikey’s father, Mahlon Williams, Vertical Academy will play a national schedule that includes 25 games in 19 states. Per Mahlon Williams, “We’re not going to be sanctioned by any high school association.”  He goes on to say,  “We’re adopting the European (basketball) model.” The Vertical Academy roster will be on display during the “Meet The Squad” practice showcase on SUVtv starting at 6:30pm ET on Friday, August 27.

On Sunday, August 29 at 3pm ET, Williams will be a part of The Main Event festivities that will tip off in Nashville, TN. The player lineup will include last year’s game MVP, JJ Taylor, as well as Isaiah West, Jahki Howard, Simeon Wilcher, and more. Paul Biancardi of ESPN and Vince Baldwin of Nike will be a part of the on-air broadcast team.
